The Shifted House

Northern Workroom has had the pleasure of designing and delivering the extension and retrofit of an existing 1820s cottage into a contemporary dwelling known as The Shifted House. Our design approach involved a deep retrofit of the current house to create a highly insulated structure that is sustainable and energy-efficient.

To complement this retrofit, we added a 21st-century addition that strikes datums with the existing structure. The extension is constructed of recycled steel, and ICF (Insulated Concrete Formwork), and utilises energy-efficient technologies wherever possible. In particular, the extension is passive in its design, reducing its demand on the grid through solar strategies and high insulation levels.

The Shifted House is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and innovation. It is a unique blend of the traditional and the modern, offering its inhabitants the best of both worlds. This house is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and sustainable, providing a comfortable and healthy living space for its occupants.
